What to Pack for Disasters and Emergencies
There are a many services that offer ready-made disaster preparedness kits. They usually have non-perishable food and survival items packed in waterproof buckets or containers. But, in a disaster, you’ll need other things beyond food and water, and you can gather most of these items from your own home. Most natural disasters have a few things in common, and you can’t go wrong by preparing for disasters in general.
Consider the Who and What as Your Starting Point
Who Will Use This Kit? How many people and pets will you be planning for and do these people have any special needs, like medication, mobility devices, or medical devices that need power? An emergency kit for a young adult will contain different items than emergency kits for a family with an infant; an emergency kit for older adults will be different than either of those two groups.
What Kind of Emergency or Disaster Are You Planning For? Depending on where you live, you may plan for tornadoes and hurricanes (southeast); or wildfires, floods or blizzards (many parts of the country); or earthquakes (west coast). Also consider if the emergency might require you to shelter in place or evacuate. If authorities warn that possible evacuations may be ordered, you might want to put together a portable emergency kit and pre-pack your car with other survival items.
We’ve consulted several agency recommendations and put together a DIY natural disaster emergency kit checklist. Here is a list of basic items to think about packing, whether a pared down version in a back pack or full-fledged kits in plastic tubs.
