5 Home Security Resolutions for 2025

Making Your Home More Secure for 2025

With the new year around the corner, we’re all making resolutions to exercise more, relax more, have a better diet. For 2025, add a couple of home security resolutions to your list. We have a short list of 5 to help keep your home safe and your family secure.

Reassess Your Security System

Technology moves fast and this includes security technology. Run through a reassessment of your home security system and see if there are any gaps or places you can improve. For instance, adding motion activated lighting near your security cameras will deter intruders as well as help capture better images of activity should anything occur. If you’ve invested in various security components, check to see if you integrate them; think about upgrading components so that your system can be integrated. If you haven’t installed a security system, look for components that can be integrated and monitored with your smart phone.

Replace Batteries and Bulbs

Check and replace any devices that use batteries, including smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, timers and smart door locks. Clean areas around your outdoor devices and light bulbs and check connections so they are free of debris. Replace any burned out lights.

Secure Your Network

Keep your security system secure by protecting your network. Hiding your network makes it harder to hack. After logging into the router settings, look for an option to hide your network name or the service set identifier (SSID). Change the default router and network name rather than keeping the default setting. Update your password from the to time and activate any firewalls and encryption setting that come with your router.

Smart Alarms

Install an alarm system if you don’t already have one. Consider installing window sensors that will set off your alarm if disturbed. Remember, the alarm only works if you set it; be sure to activate your alarm even when you leave for a short period of time.

If you are considering installing a new alarm or upgrading one, looking into smart alarms will allow you to arm or disarm and monitor your alarm with your smartphone. The security market offers a variety of smart alarms and security devices to suit your needs.

Upgrade to Keyless Entry

Upgrading your door lock from a traditional lock-and-key to keyless entry allows you to get rid of physical keys and increase security. No more hiding keys or giving duplicates to family members or service personnel. Keyless entry systems allow you to assign people their own entry code, limit access time (as an example, for a contractor during a job in your home), as well as cancel codes when you need to. They also log who enters your home and when they leave.

Physical keys can be duplicated, lost or not returned. Your home security is a little less secure with extra keys here and there. Make sure to keep a list of people who have your key and if you hide one, don’t hide it in any of the obvious hiding places.

Fortifying your home in whatever way you can increases your home security because you make your home harder for criminals to gain entry. Home security is more common and there are a wide variety of security systems – from simple to complex that will fit your budget and your needs. With your security devices in good working order, when criminals see signs your home is protected, they will move on to an easier target. This new year, these five simple resolutions will keep your home and your family more secure.
