Security Measures Warehouse Managers Need to Consider
Warehouse security is critical because so many industries rely on warehouses to store their products before being shipped to their destinations. Often because of their sheer size, warehouse security can be a challenge. But as with security of other structures, security measures that apply to warehouses should minimize the risk of theft, burglary, vandalism, fires, workplace accidents and employee injuries and maximize workplace safety and facility and property security.
Warehouses also have regulatory requirements and need to meet OSHA standards for everything from warehousing and storage requirements, to safety and security measures protecting workers, and hazardous material handling.
As technology makes warehouses more automated, cybersecurity becomes another aspect of security that need to be addressed. Technologies have made operational logistics quicker and accurate, but protecting this data adds another layer of important security.
Warehouses Have Unique Security Needs
Warehouse security pose different logistical issues because warehouses tend to be large facilities or multi-plexes. The size of these businesses can be a challenge. Warehouses also tend to be busy buildings with lots of inventory and lots of people coming and going 24-hours a day.
A comprehensive strategic approach to security must be tailored to each facility, but lowering risks, protecting valuable assets and assessing vulnerabilities in security is vital for every facility. Implementing security measures will prevent financial loss as well as emotional and mental strain on employees and owners. While keeping warehouses secure may be a challenge, effective warehouse security that protects personnel and property is not impossible.
6 Security Keys for Warehouse Security
1—Access Control System. A good access control systems to monitor who enters and exits the warehouse is a priority. Knowing who is on the premises and preventing unauthorized entry to restricted areas minimizes risk of theft, burglary, damage or other security breach. Visitor management protocols is also critical for secured areas.
A wide range of technologies allow access control:
- ID badges
- Keypads and PINs
- Key fob and sensor
- Biometric access (facial recognition or fingerprint are common)
2—Surveillance Cameras. Well-placed video surveillance cameras are essential components of warehouse security. They should cover the warehouse – entry/exits, loading docks, restricted areas, storage areas, as well as the facility perimeter, gate, parking lot and other exterior areas.
Surveillance cameras offer a variety of capabilities, but they all provide a video record of activity which can be retrieved and/or stored. Remote camera systems allow warehouse managers to view the feed wherever they are in real time.
Look for camera systems that offer:
- Good quality real-time recording in multiple areas
- Simultaneous recording and playback
- Quick retrieval of the video footage
- Remote monitoring
- Archiving and adequate storage
- Integration with other security systems
3—Motion Sensors. Motion sensors detect movement and triggering an alarms or activate cameras to capture intruders or someone entering a restricted area. Motion-detected lighting is common in warehouses and help ensure there is good lighting where you’ve installed security cameras.
4—Alarm System. Alarms alert warehouse personnel to unauthorized entry or other security breaches. The alarm system depends on the size of the warehouse facility and the restricted-access area. An added benefit of some alarm systems is they may integrate with other system components, such as chemical leaks, fire, gas and smoke.
A comprehensive surveillance systems using cameras, motion sensors and alarms is a powerful deterrent as they record activity on video, which aids investigators if an incident occurs.
5—Inventory Tracking and Management System. Investing in a robust inventory management system is vital. This responsibility generally falls under the warehouse manager, but the system must provide the tools the manager needs for accurate tracking. A good system can identify discrepancies in inventory levels, track products location and provide analytic information to identify trends or areas of concern. Accurate inventory tracking plays a significant role in loss prevention.
6—Cyber Security. Every aspect listed to maintain a high-level of warehouse security involves technology. Warehouse logistics extend into the cyber world relying on multiple integrated systems. This makes warehouses vulnerable to cyber attacks. Protecting data, as well as keeping the warehouse security system functional depends on secure firewalls, networks, software, wi-fi – and even passwords. Today’s cyber security breaches are sophisticated and often devastating. A strong digital environment is critical to protecting warehouse data operational logistics.
A Secure Warehouse is a Safe Warehouse
Creating a warehouse facility with a secured environment prevents shrinkage, delays and operational disruptions. Implementing strategic warehouse security measures is critical to minimize risks, protect warehouse personnel, property and assets and maximize safety and security.
